Research report: a multi-agent workflow with parallel search and a citation critic
Research tasks are where single-prompt agents struggle most: they skip angles, mix up sources and cite things that do not support the claim.
This workflow uses the orchestrator pattern. A planner turns the brief into search angles, two specialists search the web and your own documents in parallel, a synthesizer drafts the report from the combined evidence and a citation critic checks it before a person approves publication.

How the workflow runs, step by step
1. Start
Task Input
The research brief starts the run.
Next: Planner
2. Agent
Planner
Breaks the brief into search angles and success criteria.
Next: Web Search (angles), Docs Search (angles)
3. Tool
Web Search
Searches the web for each angle.
Next: Join
4. Tool
Docs Search
Searches the documents you paste in, such as internal notes or papers.
Next: Join
5. Join
Join
Waits for both searches and combines the evidence into labelled sections.
Next: Synthesizer
6. Agent
Synthesizer
Drafts the report from the combined evidence.
Next: Citation Critic
7. Agent
Citation Critic
A high-capability model checks that each claim is supported by a cited source.
Next: Human Gate
8. Human approval
Human Gate
A person approves the report before it is published.
Next: Publish
9. Result
Publish
The approved report is the result of the run.
Why build it as a graph
Parallel specialists finish faster than one agent working through every angle in turn, and a separate critic catches unsupported claims that the writer is unlikely to flag in its own draft. The graph shows where each part of the report came from.
Things to try
- Run it in Sim to see the parallel branches fan out and join.
- Switch to Live with your own model key to search the web for real.
- Check the cost per step: the critic is the priciest step, so try sampling it on only some runs.
